Worms Downunder
Worms Downunder is a commercial vermiculture operation which aids people and organizations to process their organic waste in a sustainable manner. Worms Downunder manufactures and installs a range of low-cost, medium-scale Worm Farms which process organic waste into nutrient rich soil conditioners. These systems are now manufactured by Worms Downunder in Queensland and Western Australia. Worms Downunder also provides back-up service to ensure systems remain efficient and effective long term.
Our Aim
The aim of Worms Downunder is to be the driving force behind organics recycling using vermiculture in Australia. Worms Downunder is committed to recycling organic waste (including food scraps, grass clippings, garden waste, waste paper and cardboard, manures, crops, etc.) and is working towards the goal of having ALL organic waste in Australia recycled. This alone would remove over 50% of waste from Australian landfill sites, thereby reducing methane emissions and ground water contamination. It would also lessen the requirements for new landfill sites and bioreactors, and result in trucking less waste around the country side with all the associated CO2 emissions.
To do this Worms Downunder is striving to provide cost-effective sustainable waste management solutions for domestic, commercial and industrial, and large scale applications. We have designed, tested, built and supplied the ‘Worm Habitat’ range, including the new ‘Worm Habitat Grande’ which is great for bulk waste such as manure waste, farm waste and also sporting club grass clippings. We are also currently developing a large-scale composting system suitable for anywhere large amounts of waste are produced.
Worms Downunder is passionate about ensuring a clean safe and sustainable future for the earth and its inhabitants.
Dr Paul Harrey (PhD B.Sc).
Since graduation in 1997 (Industrial Deisgn, Brunel University, UK) Paul has had an interesting and varied work history, he has worked as a research scientist, academic, technical manager, industrial design consultant, and more recently as Worms Downunder Founder and Director. He has always placed strong emphasis on environmentally sensitive design and practices and has worked on and patented a number of products and technologies in this field. Paul is currently working on a large-scale organic waste processing technology (on track to be commercialized in 2010). In addition to a love of the environment Paul also has a soft spot for Triumph motorcycles and Lotus Cars (no one is perfect!).
Dr Pene Mitchell (PhD. B.Arch.).
Pene is passionate about sustainable living and has focused on improving her family’s impact on the environment for over two decades. During her architecture degree she took on the environmental cause with gusto and her PhD research focused on Life Cycle Thinking and sustainability of the built environment supply chain. She is always looking for new ways to help people become more environmentally conscious. Pene now commits her time to sustainable architectural projects through her consultancy Greenhouse Design, her family, including sons Toby and Tristan, and WormsDownunder. It is a wonderful mix!
